The Radon Emanation Coefficient: an Important Tool for Geologic Radon Potential

چکیده

The fraction of radon atoms generated from radium decay that are released from into a rock or soil pore space is defined as the radon emanation coefficient, or emanating power, of the material. The emanation coefficient of rocks and soils typically varies between about 0.05 and 0.70, and an average value for soils is probably between 0.20 and 0.30. Geologic, pedologic, and climatic factors, including radium content, grain size, siting of radon parents within soil grains or on grain coatings, and soil moisture conditions, determine the soil's emanating power and radon transport characteristics. Soils derived from similar parent rocks in different regions appear to have significantly different emanation coefficients due to the effects of climate on these soil characteristics. Data on soil radium content, permeability, and moisture content arc available for many areas of the United Stales. With these and data on emanation coefficients, quantitative predictive models for radon generation in rocks and soils at regional to national scales can feasibly be developed. To predict radon generation from soils at a town, neighboorhood, or building-site scale, however, would require data at a greater level of detail than currently exists.

Radon diffusion and the emanation fraction for NIST polyethylene capsules containing radium solution

The national standard for radon (Rn) measurements in the United States is based on Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) prepared at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, MD. NIST radon standards are hermetically sealed polyethylene capsules, filled with radium (Ra) solution. In preparation of standard reference materials for Rn, it is necessary to understand pr...

Determination of exhalation rates through measurements of alpha and beta radiation with the aid of liquid scintillation counter

Radon is a natural radioactive element in the gaseous form. It is a decay product of radium, which is present in all rocks and building materials. Radon escapes from them via diffusion and convection. The effect of radon releasing from solid materials to the pore air is called emanation. The parameters that characterise quantitatively this effect are the emanation coefficient and/or exhalation ...

Nist Traceable Radon Calibration System for Calibrating

The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) has recently made available 222Rn emanation standards for test and evaluation. The NIST certified parameters include the ^ ~ a strength and the emanation coefficient. When such a source is loaded into a radon leak tight enclosure of a known volume, 222~n accumulates over time and it is possible to calculate precisely the time integrated ...

Seasonal variation on radon emission from soil and water

Radon is being measured continuously in spring water and soil-gas at Badshahi Thaul Campus, Tehri Garhwal in Himalayan region by using radon Emanometer since December 2002. An effort was made to correlate the variance of radon concentrations in spring water and soil-gas with meteorological parameters at the same location. The main meteorological parameters that affect the radon emanation from h...

Effects of heating on the emanation rates of radon-222 from a suite of natural minerals.

The emanating power of radon provides information on the internal structure of a mineral and the radiation damage caused by the decay of 238U, 235U and 232Th (and their daughters) that are present in the mineral. The concentration of 222Rn in groundwater is primarily controlled by the concentration of U and Th in the underlying rocks, as well as the emanation coefficient for that particular roc...
